If the world were a village with 1,000 people it would include:

584Asians
165People would speak Chinese
124Africans
95Eastern and Western Europeans
84Latin Americans
55Russians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, and others of that region
52North Americans
6Australians and New Zealanders
86English
83Hindu ⁄ Urdu
64Spanish
58Russian
37Arabic

And that´s only half of the mother tongues of the village. The other half speak (in descending order of frequency):

Bengal
Portuguese
Indonesian
Japanese
German
French
and two hundred other languages

In this village of 1,000 there are:

329 Christians (187 Catholics, 84 Protestants, 31 Orthodox)
178 Muslims
167 "Non religious"
60 Buddhists
45 Atheists
32 Hindus
3 Jews
86 of other religions

This is why our developing world(odw) is designed to share the richness of diverse cultures, both here in the U.S. and abroad.

In the village of 1,000 people, one third are children and only 60 are over the age of 65. Only half the children are immunized against preventable diseases, such as polio and measles.

In this 1,000 person community, 200 people receive 75% of the income; another 200 receive only 2%.

The village has a total yearly budget, public and private, of over $3 million = $3,000 per person if distributed evenly ( but we´ve seen that it´s not). Of the $3 million:

$181,000 goes to weapons and warfare
$150,000 to education
$132,000 to health care

This is why our developing world(odw) is designed to share realities of "developing countries" through programs, a free lending resource library for teachers and community member, our newsletter voices, and reality tours. And why we also invite tax deductible donations for our work and material aid abroad through local NGO´s who work with the people to help them help themselves in a non-dependent way.

We believe that a world of peace can only be achieved through working together. We can learn from each other.
